Sofia Ekströms arbete bottnar i hennes släkts förhållande till bildproduktion. Föräldrarna drev en fotobutik och studio där hemmet och familjen iscensattes för att fotograferas och visas upp i butikens skyltfönster. Hennes omsorgsfullt ljussatta målningarna refererar genom motiv eller tillkomstsätt till fotografi.
Sofia Ekström tog examen från Kungliga Konsthögskolan i Stockholm 2013, och samma år tilldelades hon Aguélipriset. Sofia Ekström använder målade bakgrunder – den typ som används i fotostudior – som element i teatrala installationer, i sina målningar och som utgångspunkt för berättande. I frånvaron av ett konkret motiv möts episk romantik och nostalgisk kitsch, måleri och fotografi, nu och då, det observerade och observatören. Hon rör sig mellan bildens olika reproduktionsmiljöer; fotografiets inneboende komplexitet och måleriets potential. Ekström arbetar även med film, både iscensatt och med dokumentära inslag.
Sofia Ekström's work is rooted in her family's relationship with image production. Her parents ran a photo store and studio where the home and family were staged to be photographed and displayed in the shop window. Her carefully lit paintings reference photography through their motifs or method of creation.
Sofia Ekström graduated from the Royal Institute of Arts in Stockholm 2013, and the same year she received the Aguéli prize. Sofia Ekström's uses painted backdrops - the type used in photo studios - as elements in theatrical installations, in her paintings, and as a departure for narration. In the absence of a tangible motif, epic romance intersects with nostalgic kitsch, painting with photography, now with then, the observed with the observer. She moves between the different habitats of image reproduction; photography's inherent complications and of painting's potential. Ekström also works with film, both staged and with documentary elements.
